Arches Directors Award 2006

In line with the Arches’ (Glasgow) long-standing commitment to support and nurture Scotland’s best young theatre talent, the Arches Award for Stage Directors, which has offered valuable financial, professional and creative support to emergent directors since 2002, will now be run in association with the National Theatre of Scotland and the Traverse Theatre. Using these additional resources, the Arches hopes to establish the award as a solid platform for new stage directors throughout Scotland; a project unrivalled in the UK.

The award is open to all emergent stage directors over the age of twenty who have demonstrated a commitment both to working professionally and to working in Scotland. From 2006, the selection panel will be expanded to include artistic representatives from the National Theatre of Scotland and the Traverse Theatre.

Both productions will premiere at the Arches Theatre Festival in April 2006, then transfer to the Traverse Theatre for a week’ run. Each of the two winners will receive a production budget of £6,000, alongside the free use of the allocated spaces, the full support of the Arches’ marketing and technical teams and the services of an experienced directing mentor. Both winners will be invited to undertake a week’s pre-rehearsal development work sponsored by the National Theatre of Scotland.

Examples of the type of applicants who might take advantage of the Arches Award for Stage Directors are:

  • Directors of new and unfunded professional theatre companies
  • Graduates of directing courses
  • Professionals trained/experienced in other art forms wanting to change direction
  • Directors with experience of community based projects who wish to move into professional theatre

(It should be noted that this list is not exhaustive and the selection panel will welcome all applications.)

The Arches is committed to supporting a diverse programme of theatre to encourage both a wide variety of talent and a broad audience base. As a result we are inviting proposals for devised work; visual theatre; physical theatre and new writing. The judges will select two proposals that demonstrate individual vision and which together create a contrasting programme.

Application packs are available to download at www.thearches.co.uk or from lj@thearches.co.uk

Please do not send in your CV without first requesting the application pack.

Closing date for first stage applications: Monday 8th August 2005.
