Dateline: 24th March, 2005
The Arches Theatre Festival Glasgow's Arches Theatre Festival runs from 5th to 17th April this year. The programme, the theatre says, is far more challenging and combative than previously, as writers and theatremakers around the country begin to respond to the contemporary political climate and redefine the boundaries of theatre accordingly. Representing new Scottish writing are Arches Award Winner Davey Anderson and young Edinburgh-based company Laboratorium-33. Davey's play Snuff is a jet-black comedy examining Scottish masculinity in the aftermath of the war on terror. Two new plays, Chaos and Bells, from Kali Theatre,a London based company who specialise in work by upcoming Asian women writers, also respond to similar stimuli in strikingly different ways. A strong physical theatre lineup this year is spearheaded by the internationally renowned performance company Derevo, who bring the UK premiere of their new work, Ketzal, to the Arches. Making a welcome return are Rotozaza with Doublethink; they experiment with unrehearsed performers and improvised material to chaotic and frequently hilarious effect. Acclaimed Welsh choreographer Sean Tuan John returns after massive success at Arches Live with a gritty, contemporary reinterpretation of the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm, while Uninvited Guests completely redefine the phrase "physical theatre" with Schlock, an uncompromising piece which features a soundtrack live-sampled from the performers' bodies.
In complete contrast, Arches Award Winner Skye Loneragan offers a entirely refreshing take on the strange business of being a grownup, with a whimsical devised piece, A Little Laugh I Lost Somewhere, inspired by Antoine de Saint Exupéry's much-loved The Little Prince. This year there'll be a new Festival Pass, which offers excellent value for money. For £20 (£15 concessions) you can see as much of the programme as you can cram into two weeks (except for Derevo). The Festival Pass is available from the Arches Box Office: enquiries on 0870 240 7528. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
