Shakespeare’s Globe

Around Weekends at the Globe

Globe Education’s Around Weekends at Shakespeare’s Globe are an opportunity to explore different plays in depth with actors, directors, scholars and critics, providing personal perspectives on the four Shakespeare plays in the current season at the Globe Theatre.

Centred around a performance of the play, each weekend provides a practical understanding of the work and insights into the creation of the production.

Around Weekends begin on Friday evenings with a drinks reception and chaired discussion with the director of the play. Over the weekend, lectures by leading Shakespeare scholars, scene explorations and review discussions take place.

A pre-performance talk prepares participants for the Saturday matinee of the play and there is an opportunity to share views about the production afterwards. On the Sunday, participants go to a staged reading of a related play or source reading presented by Globe actors. There is also the option to attend a screening of a film or TV version of the play.

The Weekends

Around King Lear, 20-22 June

What makes King Lear Shakespeare's most awesome and tender tragedy?
Highlights of the weekend include a talk with the production's director and Artistic Director of the Globe, Dominic Dromgoole, a staged reading of Gorboduc, a source for King Lear and the first English play in blank verse, and an optional screening of Akira Kurosawa's film version, Ran.

Around The Merry Wives of Windsor, 8-10 August

Shakespeare's brilliantly constructed farce is his only comedy set in England. Is it also the first ever sit-com?
Find out over the weekend which will include a discussion with the production's director Christopher Luscombe, and a story-telling performance of the source play Il Pecorone by Saul Jaffe and Danny Scheinmann.

Around A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 5-7 September

Shakespeare's ultimate summer delight glitters on the surface, but have you glimpsed the magic underneath?
Around the performance in the Globe will be a discussion with the production's director, Jonathan Munby, a post-show discussion with the cast, and your chance to write a review of the play with critic Heather Neill.

Around Timon of Athens, 19-21 September

Why is Shakespeare's Timon of Athens so rarely seen?
Highlights of the weekend will include a discussion with the production's director Lucy Bailey, who directed Titus Andronicus at the Globe in 2006, and a unique staged reading of Thomas Shadwell's 1677 version of the play.

Tickets range from £160 to £175 depending on the type of ticket for the matinee performance and £135 to £150 for concessions. Tickets include all talks, lectures, workshops, a theatre ticket, programme and sandwich lunch on the Saturday and Sunday. Accommodation is not included.
