Arts Theatre to Close This Month

London's Arts Theatre will close on 16th July when the current production, Immodesty Blaize and Walter's Burlesque! ends. The show's closure comes two weeks early.

As we reported in May, the theatre is, according to its director Edward Snape, deteriorating rapidly and the landlords, Gamma Investments of India, refuse to make any improvements as they plan to redevelop the whole block for commercial use.

Under Westminster Council's planning regulations, if the theatre is redveloped as a hotel or other commercial property, the owners (Gamma) must include a theatre in the new building or pay a very substantial sum to the council to build a new theatre nearby. The concern that Snape and others have is that Gamma may decide to include a conference centre - possibly in the basement of the building, Snape thinks - which can be used as a way of cirumventing the regulations.
