Arts Theatre to Reopen

Great Newport Street's Arts Theatre will reopen in January 2009 following a facelift.

Opened in 1927, the Arts Theatre was originally a private members' theatre so as to avoid the censorship of the Lord Chamberlain. In the fifties it was run by Sir Peter Hall who presented the premiere of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Other notable UK and world premieres include Pinter’s The Caretaker, Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane, O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh and Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer. More recent productions include Happy Days, The Vagina Monologues, Jesus Hopped the A Train, The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged) and Dice Man.

The 347 seat venue will stage and present quality drama, comedy, small scale musicals and one off special events. In addition the theatre will provide medium-scale touring companies with a central London showcase opportunity. It is envisaged that the theatre will host seasons of work and be used for auditions, showcases and play readings. The theatre will also adopt a fluid performance times schedule to cater for an audience of 2009 and beyond.

Mig Kimpton, former general manager for the Carl Rosa Opera Company, has been appointed director. He was recently responsible for the planning, launch and operation of the Sound Theatre, Leicester Square. His aim is to make the Arts Theatre a "vibrant building with a high standard of theatrical product and service."
