Michael Attenborough

University Honours Attenborough

Michael Attenborough is to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Leicester on Thursday 7th July.

The award marks the third generation of the Attenborough family to be associated with the University. Fred Attenborough, Michael Attenborough’s grandfather, was Principal of the University College between 1932-51. Michael Attenborough is being awarded an honorary degree for his contribution to the dramatic arts.

Michael Attenborough was born in London and educated at Westminster School and the University of Sussex. He worked as Associate Director at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester (1972-74), the Leeds Playhouse (1974-78) and the Young Vic (1979-80).

He was Artistic Director at the Palace Theatre, Watford (1980-84) and the Hampstead Theatre (1984-89), during which period the theatre won 33 major awards. He was Principal Associate Director and Executive Producer at the Royal Shakespeare Company (1990-2002), and on leaving was invited to become Honorary Associate Artist. Freelance work includes productions for The Abbey Theatre, Dublin, Royal Court, National Theatre and two productions on Broadway. In 2002 he was appointed Artistic Director at the Almeida Theatre.
