World War I woes: the cast of Lest We Forget

Buxton Fringe award winners Aulos Productions return to the Derbyshire festival for the third successive year, this time with Lest We Forget, a new play exploring ideas of commemoration and remembrance.

James Beagon’s play asks people to question the difference between truth and legacy. It asks what being a soldier in the Great War truly meant and how in the immediate aftermath the absence of those men took a toll on the people left behind.

When Harry Ashwood was killed in battle, he was proclaimed a hero. His surviving siblings are left with only their memories and the task of caring for their ageing mother. She relentlessly campaigns against the army for the right to bring her beloved boy home to rest. But is the mud of the Somme masking the man he really was?

The cast comprises Sophie Harris (Edith), Grace Gilbert (Helen), Lewis Robertson (Tom), Heather Daniel (Dorothy) and Rob Younger (Martin).

James Beagon directs. Joseph McAulay is assistant director, costume manager is Arielle Kalin, set manager is Daniel Orejon and technical manager is Boris Kostadinov.

Aulos Productions’ First Class was winner of best new writing at Buxton Fringe in 2014 and was nominated for best production. Women of the Mourning Fields was nominated for best production in 2015.

Lest We Forget will be performed in Underground Venues on Thursday 14 July at 5:30PM and Friday 15 and Sunday 17 July at 1:30PM.
