Stratford East to Premiere Broadway Hit

The Theatre Royal, Stratford East, will be the venue for the UK premiere of Tony winner Avenue Q. It will play for eight weeks at the East London venue, beginning in February, before transfering to the West End, where it is expected to go into one of Cameron Mackintosh's theatres.

In New York Avenue Q began Off-Broadway and then transferred in 2003, going on to win the 2004 Tony award for Best Musical.

The cast consists of three actors and four puppeteers. It's the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod - a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Also in the Theatre Royal autumn season are:

  • Bashment by Rikki Beadle-Blair, revived by popular demand after its premiere in May
  • Gladiator Games by Tanika Gupta, produced in association with the Sheffield Crucible Studio
  • A pantomime version of Pinocchio
  • A stage version of the film The Harder They Come (April 2006)
