Ayckbourn to Step Down at SJT Sir Alan Ayckbourn is to leave his post as artistic director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough next summer, although he will not be leaving the theatre entirely as he will continue to direct his own plays, whether new or revivals. He joined the SJT in 1957 as actor/ASM and has been artistic director for 36 years. A new director will be appointed in time to plan the 2009 - 2010 season. Ayckbourn, who is 68, suffered a stroke last year.
