Polka Tackles Bullying Polka Theatre, the only purpose-built children's theatre in the country, is combining with Watershed Productions to produce Jacqueline Wilsons Bad Girls, adapted for the stage and directed by Vicky Ireland, after a UK tour. The play opens on 5th February (previews from 27th January) and runs until 9th April at the Wimbledon venue. Bad Girls tells the story of Mandy, a young girl who has been picked on for as long as she can remember, and her unlikely friendship with the wayward Tanya, an older girl who lives nearby with her foster mother. Mandys mum isnt happy about their relationship she thinks Tanyas a bad influence - but Mandys sure that Tanya can only get her out of trouble, not into it
Jacqueline Wilson has sold over 15 million books in the UK alone, and was voted English childrens favourite author in a recent MORI poll. In 2004, Jacqueline Wilson was named the most borrowed author (of either adult or childrens literature) in UK libraries.
Wilsons staggering popularity lies in the true-to-life situations to which her young readership can easily relate. Bad Girls is no exception, where bullying, peer pressure and the strain of parental expectations are all explored. Above all, however, it is a story of friendship and growing up, and its depiction of both school and family life will strike a chord with children aged 8+ and adults alike Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
