Dateline: 10th February, 2006
Barber to Narrate Pietà Frances Barber is to be narrator of a new oratorio Pietà, inspired by the Michaelangelo statue of the same name, at St Paul's on the Piazza, Covent Garden, on 10th March at 8.00pm. Pietà, composed by Shane Cullinan, it is likely to provoke controversy as it updates the story to contemporary Manchester and describes the raw emotions of a mother's response to her son's death from street violence and gun crime. Barber's narration is accompanied by award-winning soprano Claire O'Brien, alongside celebrated cor anglaisist Jessica Mogridge. The three women will be backed by a large string ensemble, collectively portraying the role and response of the mother. Composer Shane Cullinan has worked independently as a composer and arranger since graduating from Nottingham Trent University seven years ago. He hs composed for Channel 4 and the BBC and for the Molinari Quartet in North America while studying at Princeton, New Jersey. His oratorical work, Acid Circus, played to sell out audiences at Castlegate Hall, Nottingham, and at Manchester Town Hall. His opera, Tacitly Type Tabes was performed at The Bonington Gallery, Nottingham, and is soon to be produced at the historic Pittman College. His piece Now was performed by soprano Alison Guille in a festival at the Royal College of Music and awarded best dramatic song/musical theatre. His score to C4's Insight In Mind was recently screened at the National Film Theatre.
