25 Years, 10% Cut, £1/4m Surplus Launching the Barbican Centre's 25th birthday celebrations, managing director Sir John Tusa said that he expected a trading surplus of £250,000 in the current financial year in spite of what had been effectively a 10% cut in funding in real terms. He went so far as to say that the Centre's artistic programme would be in jeopardy if new core funding is not found. The Barbican's budget for the year is £32m and it has generated £6m in box office income, but has been badly affected by a massive increase in energy costs. Repeat attenders at the centre now stand at 58% (30% in 2003) and now the Centre is producing 80% of its artistic aoutput, as compared to 10% in 1995, when, of course, it was the RSC's London home. He announced there are now four artistic associates. As well as Cheek by Jowl and the Michael Clark Company, Michael Keegan Dolan, director of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, and Deborah Warner have also been appointed and Graham Sheffield, the Barbican's artistic director, confirmed that Warner would be directing a production on the main stage next year. Warner directed Julius Caesar with Ralph Fiennes and Simon Russell Beale as part of BITE05. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
