As an addition to its joint production with the West Yorkshire Playhouse
and Theatro Romea, Barcelona, of Orwell's Homage to Catalonia,
northern stage presents a a two-week festival of music, dance, film,
theatre, art, poetry, & prose celebrating Catalan traditions and
culture at the Newcastle Playhouse, from Thursday 22nd April to Saturday
8th May
Andana
On St George's Day, The Barcelona Connection celebrates the patron
saint day of Catalonia - St Jordi. Sweethearts should exchange gifts
- roses for "novias" and books for "novios". To
mark St Jordi's Day, one of Barcelona's most dynamic and contemporary
bands, Andana, will play their "hard folk" repertoire in
the Playhouse Foyer. Tapas - Catalan style - will be available throughout
the evening.

An original dance piece explores "the impressions people make
on the land and the impression the land makes on people". With
Catalan choreographer Vicky Mateu from Dance City and northern stage

Flying Homages
Four North East writers present their poetic homages to Barcelona
life and culture. This event is a collaboration with The University
of Newcastle and New Writing North and is directed by northern stage's

Miquel Gill
Valencian singer/songwriter Miquel Gill combines an eclectic mix of
sounds from the regions of Catalonia, Provence and Valencia in a fusion
of Mediterranean folk music and ethnic rock in this special late night

Sol de Nit
Sol de Nit - a five piece band whose name means 'Night Sun' take to
the Gulbenkian Studio stage with original and traditional music -featuring
fiddle, diatonic accordion, trombone, guitar, mandolin, cello, whistles,
bagpies, voices and more. Sol di Nit are inventive arrangers, bringing
their own sound to the music of their region - and of the world.

Las Hijas de la Verguenza
A death-row inmate is interviewed about his life which he has spent
living, working and hustling around the beautiful sites and hidden
dangers of Barcelona. Las Hijas de la Verguenza is a new piece
devised by northern stage ensemble member, Francisco Alfonsin-Sanchez
and is directed by Spanish director Juan Dolores Caballero. Featuring
members of the northern stage ensemble.
