Dateline: 26th April, 2004 Bartlett to Leave Hammersmith Neil Bartlett, artistic director of the Lyric, Hammersmith, is to leave his post at the end of November, after ten years. He emphasised that his decsiion to leave is not health-related (he was forced to step down in 1999 when he had a liver transplant) but is due to his desire to move on to new things. Already in the pipeline are a new translation of Genets The Maids for BBC Radio Three, a staging of Marlowes Dido, Queen of Carthage for the American Repertory Theatre in Boston and tfinishing his new novel. It was, he says, a very difficult decision to make: "When I took this job, the Lyric was weeks away from closing its doors. Now it is thriving. This, then, seems as good a time as any to hand over the reins of this extraordinary theatre to someone new. Bartlett received the OBE for services to theatre in 2000 and has directed 21 shows at the Hammersmith venue. Currently his production of Oliver Twist is on a national tour. The process of selecting his successor will begin next week. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
