Bath Theatre Royal

Autumn in Bath

Two very different shows, both bound for the West End, are among the highlights of the forthcoming season at Bath Theatre Royal.

  • Felicity Kendal, who last appeared heat the theatre re a few years ago in Peter Hall's production of Happy Days, stars in a revival of David Hare's acclaimed Amy's View, an "enthralling and witty drama" about love and loss.
  • Comedian Mel Smith, who recently starred as Churchill in Allegiance at the Edinburgh Fringe, appears in a new comedy by Gerald Sibleyras, whose comedy Heroes - which can also be seen at Bath this autumn - won the 2006 Olivier Award for best new comedy. Belinda Lang, best known for TV series including 2 Point 4 Children, co-stars.
  • Heroes, set in a military hospital in 1959, finds three veterans from the First World War reflecting on their lives and stars Art Malik, Christopher Timothy and Michael Jayston.
  • Fresh from the Chichester Festival comes Entertaining Angels, also en route to the West End. Written by Richard Everett, the comedy stars Penelope Keith.

Other season highlights include the resurrection of Steptoe and Son in Steptoe and Son in Murder at Oil Drum Lane which is co-scripted by Ray Galton, one of the original script writers for the legendary BBC TV series. There's dance too, with Ballet Rambert, music ranging from baroque opera through jazz with Humphrey Lyttleton to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel; a seasonal outing for Cinderella and the promise of a stunning spectacular mixing slapstick with visual extravagance and beauty in Slava's Snowshow, created in America, which had critics here fumbling for superlatives.
