BECTU: Wage Freeze or Industrial Action?

According to a report in The Stage, BECTU has sent a letter to its reps in regional theatres to infom, them that negotiations between the union and the Theatrical Management Association over a 5% pay claim have broken down. The TMA has prosposed a wage freeze, to be reviewed probably in six months, citing the economic downturn and the claim that theatres are not performing as well as last year.

BECTU refuses to continue negotiations on other aspects of its claim until it has consulted with its members and has asked local reps to consult with members to ask if a wage freeze is acceptable (the union believes it is not) and if members would be willing to take industrial action, up to and including strike action, in pursuit of the claim..

This is a consultative letter, not an official strike ballot as defined by the law.

The dispute with BECTU comes as Equity has submitted a 14% pay claim to the TMA.
