Below Inflation Rise BECTU (Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union) members in regional theatres have accepted a rise of 3.5%, which is below the rate of inflation. Although the official inflation rate is now 2.5%, retail price inflation, which is a cost of living measure used by wage negotiators, was 4.1% in February. The deal gives a rise of 3.5% in the minimum hourly rate, a 3% rise in allowances and other payments, and a 0.5% increase in employers pension contributions. The deal, which applies to technical and front of house staff in regional theatres was agreed by a two to one majority of BECTU memebrs and now goes back to the Theatrical Management Association for ratification. Commenting on the settlement Willy Donaghy, supervisory official, said, The pay award for this year is clearly below inflation and that is a disappointment. However, it does reflect the best settlement that could be achieved by negotiation and where our members are covered by specific House Agreements there may be the opportunity to secure some additional monies.
