Bernays Takes Over at Newcastle Following a nationwide search, the Theatre Royal Newcastle has announced the appointment of Philip Bernays as its new Chief Executive to succeed Peter Sarah who died sadly and suddenly in April. Philip Bernays is 45 and has been the Chief Executive of the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham for almost ten years, in two spells. He has steered the Everyman to a position of remarkable strength and success, having led it out of a previous period of significant financial and artistic uncertainty. He is also an active member of a number of boards and arts organisations in Gloucestershire and the South West. The Everyman punches much more than its weight, selling over 80% of its tickets each year. With 682 seats, it has not many more than half the number at the Theatre Royal, and yet Philip has astutely been able to programme a number of the same productions that have visited Newcastle in recent years. Furthermore the Everyman is an extremely busy theatre with very active education and outreach programmes and strong community links. John Shipley, Chair of the Theatre Royal Trust, said, " Many of the most talented and experienced theatre managers in the land applied for this post. My colleagues and I are unanimous in recognising that, in Philip Bernays, we have found absolutely the best person for the job. His track record in Gloucestershire speaks for itself and his energy, judgement and flair make him a worthy successor to Peter Sarah. I very much look forward to working with him in the years ahead. " Philip Bernays said, "I am thrilled to have been appointed to this position. It is an immensely exciting theatre in an exciting city - the Theatre Royal has a long and proud history and I look forward to playing a part in fulfilling its enormous potential for the future. I know there is a very able team at the theatre and I greatly look forward to working with them. I am very proud of everything that has been achieved at the Everyman and will be very sad to leave, as it has become a part of my life, but moving to the Theatre Royal is an opportunity that I cannot refuse." Bernays is a former student at the University of Newcastle where he was President of the Theatre Society. He is married to Sue, with two children and will take up his new job later this autumn.
