Dateline: 2nd April, 2009
Betts' Edinburgh Success at the Arcola Another of the successes of last year's Edinburgh Fringe, Torben Betts' Fringe First-nominated Lie of the Land is to have its London premiere at Dalston's Arcola Theatre from 8th April (previews from 6th) to 2nd May. The narrative, inspired by a nightmare Betts had shortly after moving to Berwick-on-Tweed from London, returns to a common theme in his work, questioning if it is possible to be truly happy in a society driven by competition. The production has a stereo soundscape created by Steve Mayo, head of sound for Barbican International Theatre Events and sound designer on Stovepipe, with projection designed by acclaimed video designer Oscar Sharp. Matthew Kelly provides the voice of God. It is directed by Adam Barnard, who also directed Torben Bettss The Swing of Things in 2007. He is currently directing the world premiere of Ted Hughes adaptation The Story of Vasco at the Orange Tree, and will direct Ordinary Dreams at the Trafalgar Studios later this year. He was formerly artistic director of Activated Image, directing Edinburgh premieres of Amy Evans Strike (Fringe First nomination) and The Straight Man, both by John Finnemore, amongst other plays. He has also directed at Richmond's Orange Tree and Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre.
The husband and wife in the play are played by real life couple Christopher Harper and Emily Bowker.
