Dateline: 25th April, 2004 Billy Elliot the Musical to Open in Newcastle The musical stage version of the film Billy Elliot, naturally titled Billy Elliot the Musical, will premiere in Newcastle later this year. Although no announcement has yet been made, the production, which will be directed by Stephen Daldry, who also directed the film, is expected to open at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House. It is then expected to move into the West End, but, gain, no announcement abut which theatre it will be has yet been made. The idea for the musical, Daldry told the BBC, came from Elton John, who is writing the songs. Casting has been going on for some time, with many established North East actors having worked with Daldry over the last few months in workshop-style situations. He has also been holding auditions throughout the country for a boy to play Billy, as Jamie Bell, who starred in the film, has indicated that he is not interested. Ideally Daldry wants to find three boys to alternate playing the part. As the chosen boys must be able to do ballet, tap and contemporary dance to a very high standard, and be able to sing, there have been numerous call-back and workshop sessions here too. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
