Dateline: 27th June, 2004
Billy Elliot Newcastle Venue Safe Although no public announcement has been made, we understand that that the Newcastle Opera House, which was to have been the home for the premiere of Billy Elliot the Musical but which went into liquidation last week, has been taken over by the company behind the Newcastle Arena. We also understand that the staff (although not the management) of the Opera House will also be taken over. Insiders say that arrangements for staffing are already being made but Newcastle theatre-scene observers are less than confident. "Successive managements have stripped the theatre of most of its former assets," one observer told the BTG, "and the Victorian stage machinery beneath the stage has been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that it cannot work without a major overhaul." ***** In another development, the West End home for the musical was last week confirmed as the Victoria Palace and the date of opening as 11th March. Booking has already opened. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
