Brian Wilde as Foggy in Last of the Summer Wine

Brian Wilde (1927 - 2008)

Actor Brian Wilde, best known for his roles as Foggy in Last of the Summer Wine and as Barraclough in Porridge, has died at the age of 80. His son Andrew told the Press Association that his father suffered a fall about seven weeks ago and had not recovered. He died in his sleep in a nursing home on Thursday.

Although he had appeared in minor roles in a number of films, including The Jokers and Carry On Doctor, it was the two sitcoms which brought him to public attention becoming, as Last of the Summer Wine producer Alan JW Bell told the BBC, the "best of the show's 'third men'" after the late Bill Owen and Peter Sallis. He was, Bell added, "the most loved of all the characters."

He joined Porridge alongside Ronnie Barker in 1973 and Last of the Summer Wine, where he appeared in over a hundred episodes, in 1976. He left the series in 1985 but rejoined in 1990 and stayed until 1997.
