Dateline: 9th March, 2004 Bridewell Saved London's Bridewell Theatre, often called the music theatre laboratory because of its work in the development of new musicals and the revival of older ones, has received grants totalling £60,000 from the Corporation of London and ACE. Added to the £50,000 the theatre had already raised from private sources, the money means that it can sign a new two year lease on the property. Last year the theatre's landlords the St Bride's Institute, which until then had charged no rent for the premises, announced that a change in the lease would mean that the theatre would have to pay the full rent and a service charge of £90,000 a year. The theatre immediately announced an appeal to raise the money and went ahead with planning its work for this year. The deadline for the signing of the new lease is 31st March, so the grants came just in time to enable the theatre to sign the new two-year lease with confidence. Currently playing at the Bridewell is their revival of Sondheim's Passion which opens tonight and runs until 3rd April. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
