Dateline: 8th April, 2007
"Large-scale, classical theatre for international audiences" is the aim of The Bridge Project, a new Anglo-American co-operation between Sam Mendes and Caro Newling's Neal Street Productions, Joseph V Melillo's Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and Kevin Spacey's Old Vic. For each of three years from 2008, an Anglo-American company will present a double bill of classical theatre at the Old Vic, BAM and at least one other international venue. The first double bill, directed by Mendes, will be Hamlet and The Tempest, which will star Stephen Dillane as Hamlet and Prospero. It will be performed at BAM (JanuaryMarch), Piccolo Teatro, Milan (April) and The Old Vic (MayJune). 2009's offering will be Simon Russell Beale as Leontes in The Winters Tale and Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard, again directed by Mendes. No details of the 2010 productions have been announced, except that they will again be directed by Mendes. "The Bridge Project places the exchange of ideas, talent and creativity between London and New York at the heart of the process," a press statement says, "and is borne out of Sam Mendes, Joseph V Melillo and Kevin Spaceys shared desire to produce large-scale, classical theatre for international audiences." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
