Brighton Celebrates 200 Years A day of special events will be taking place on Wednesday 27th June to mark the date when Theatre Royal Brighton first opened her doors to the public 200 years ago. The first play to be performed at the venue in 1807 was Hamlet starring Charles Kemble, one of the leading actors of the day. The Theatre will be celebrating the anniversary with an open day from 2.30pm - 6pm when the public will be able to enjoy the following free activities:
Following the daytime events there will be a special late night free dance, circus and music performance in New Road starting at 10.30pm. There will also be the publication and broadcast of 200 Stories For 200 Years by The Argus (the local newspaper) and BBC Southern Counties Radio, the culmination of a unique project celebrating two centuries of theatre at the venue. The birthday celebrations also coincide with the completion of the redesign of New Road, which has been re-paved to become a pedestrian friendly space linking many of the major cultural attractions in Brighton & Hove. Julien Boast, Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Brighton said, "The celebrations on Wednesday 27th June are a fantastic landmark in the life of Theatre Royal Brighton. How many businesses manage to thrive for 200 years? It's an achievement that we're incredibly proud of and I'd like to thank everyone throughout the city and beyond who has supported us over the years. "These celebrations are also important for another reason, as they mark the completion of New Road. The centre of Brighton has been transformed by the work that has been done, making it a really pleasant public space and a significant cultural destination at the heart of the city." The Thetare Royal is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group.
