British Council Disbands Arts Departments

After earlier this year disbanding its advisory panels in the Arts, which were made up of volunteers, the executive board of the British Council has this week decided to to get rid of its departments of film, drama, dance, literature, design, and the visual arts and instead organise its cultural staff into panels with the titles Progressive Facilitation, Market Intelligence Network, Knowledge Transfer Function and Modern Pioneer.

It is expected that many of the cultural staff will leave the organisation and it is thought that around eleven jobs will go in the current revamp. 25 jobs at the Council were lost in another revamp earlier this year.

However, Venu Dhupa, who was recently appointed as director of arts, said the council was consulting on how to improve its impact, make better use of its networks and enhance transparency.

The former chief executive of the Nottingham Playhouse and fellowship director at the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts added, "There is certainly no intention of reducing either the arts expenditure or the expertise. We want the arts to play a much greater part rather than a smaller part."

According to its website, the British Council is "the UK's public diplomacy and cultural organisation. We work in 110 countries and our aim is to connect people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK to build lasting relationships around the world.

"(The Council's) Arts Group is made up of around sixty staff in the UK, whose job it is to search for the best UK artists and arts professionals to work overseas, and arts managers that are situated in each country, who programme the work that will be right for their countries audience and also meets the British Council's objectives.

"The British Council’s Arts Group consists of a team of professionals who mobilise the best of British creative talent to develop innovative programmes that will engage with thousands of people all over the world, drawing them into a closer relationship with the UK. The areas we cover include music, drama, dance, visual arts, design , architecture, film, literature, museums management and the creative economy, and we have multi-disciplinary arts specialists based in our offices in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast."
