Brum's Old Rep Returns Birmingham's historic Old Rep theatre officially reopens its doors this week with a special adaptation from the Young REP of Twelfth Night, the first play ever performed there 95 years ago. The original home of Sir Barry Jackson's Birmingham Repertory Company and the UK's first purpose-built repertory theatre, the Old Rep officially relaunched today, Thursday 2nd October, following a £500,000 refurbishment. The programme of renovations has been designed to improve and enhance the access and facilities for visitors while maintaining the character of this Grade II listed building. The Autumn/ Winter season then kicks off on Tuesday 7th October with the Birmingham Stage Company's production of David Almond's award winning book Skellig. The BSC, the Old Rep's resident company, then return at Christmas with Michael Morpurgo's Why the Whales Came. Other highlights of the forthcoming season include Fame the Musical from BMOS Musical Theatre Company, BMOS Youtheatre's Aladdin and the MCS Rep Company's Alice in Wonderland. The theatre closed in February to undergo a programme of renovations to provide lift access for wheelchair users, improved box office, refreshment and toilet facilities. Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said, "The Old Rep is a vital part of Birmingham's cultural history, and has played host to a wealth of big names and historic productions. Renovating these key areas of the building has made visiting this fabulous theatre an even more enjoyable experience for years to come."
