Budget Gives £12m for Arts Training

Arts Council England will be given an extra £12m, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown announced in his budget today. The extra cash is to be spent on improving training fot peopler involved in the arts in England.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said, "Our artists and arts institutions have an international reputation for excellence. But we need to make sure the management and leadership of these companies matches up to the art. That's why we're investing in skills to help correct this. We've got the what right, this new money will help us get the how."

A DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) spokesman emphasised how important it is to have a clearer career structure for the future arts leaders, pointing to the fact that the arts are an important and growing sector of the British economy, both in terms of turnover and the number of people employed.

The next step, the spokesman added, is for the DCMS to work with ACE and the Learning and Skills Council to develop training models.
