Restoring the Repertoire in Autumn
Bury St Edmunds' Theatre Royal, the only surviving example of a Regency
theatre in Britain (built in 1819), has announced its sutumn season
of plays in its Restoring the Repertoire series:
Friday 4 Saturday 19 September
A Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds Production in association with Anvil
Arts, Basingstoke
Hes Much to Blame
A comedy in five acts by Thomas Holcroft
First performed in 1798 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden
Directed by Colin Blumenau
A funny and sharply observed satire which may be one of the eighteenth
centurys finest comedies, but at its core is a radical and highly
political critique of Georgian society. A cast of hilariously eccentric
characters populate a story of lost love, ladies in disguise and old
scores to be settled, as Holcroft shines a harsh light on the vices,
vanities and virtues of his time. Will Maria recover her vanished
suitor, Sir George Versatile? Will Lord Vibrate finally take action
to save his familys fortunes? And will the German Doctor Gosterman
continue to create mayhem with his indiscretions and blunders?
Playing in repertoire with
The Celebrated Mrs Inchbald
Written and performed by Katie Bonna
A study of Burys playwright, Elizabeth Inchbald. Independent,
determined, ambitious, witty and talented, the beautiful Mrs
Inchbald was a remarkable woman. Born in 1753 in Stanningfield,
near Bury St Edmunds, she became one of the most successful playwrights
of her time, and her play Lovers Vows is immortalised
in Jane Austens Mansfield Park.
Monday 14 September
A Rehearsed Reading of
The Road to Ruin
A comedy in five acts by Thomas Holcroft
First performed on 18 February 1792 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden
Thomas Holcrofts most successful play, in which he skilfully
paints the picture of a superficial and decadent society. Bankers
son Harry Dornton has brought his fathers business to the brink
of bankruptcy due to reckless gambling. Is his desperate, last ditch
attempt to avert disaster going to work?
Thursday 15 October
At The Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds
A Rehearsed Reading of
The Rent Day
A domestic drama by Douglas Jerrold
First performed on 25 January 1832
The Rent Day is a boisterous mix of sentiment and broad comedy,
telling the story of virtuous Martin Heywoods struggle against
repossession, and featuring a colourful cast of characters including
the treacherous steward Crumbs; avaricious appraiser Bullfrog, and
unscrupulous Silver Jack.
Thursday 12 November
At the Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds
A Rehearsed Reading of
Speculation
A comedy by Frederick Reynolds
First performed in 1795
A satire on the murky world of financial speculation. Mr Project has
embezzled his rich wards inheritance and lost it in hopeless
investment schemes his only hope is to marry her off before
anybody takes a look at his books. With scenes taking place everywhere
from country estates to Debtors prison and Bubbles Gambling
Club, this play gives a fascinating prospect over the Georgian social
scene.
