Bush on the Move Hammersmith and Fulham Council has given the old library building on Uxbridge Road in Shepherd's Bush to the Bush Theatre as its new home with a 125 year lease on a peppercorn rent. "For the first time," artistic director Josie Rourke said, "the Bush will have its own bar and cafe, rehearsal space, and decent offices and dressing rooms. We'll be accessible to wheelchairs, something we can't be at the moment. There will be places for playwrights to write, read and be in residence and one room will hold a small library of playtexts. It's a building where artists can meet and mix with audiences and the local community. Most importantly, there is a large, beautiful room at the heart of the building that will become our new theatre space." It will occupy the building, just a minute's walk from its current space above ONeills pub, from October 2011. The new flexible theatre will have a capacity of 140, more than twice the size of the current space. Minister for Culture Ed Vaizey, a fomer member of the Bush theatres board, said, "This is brilliant news, Im over the moon that the Bush theatre has a new home, and most importantly that it will remain right in the heart of the local community. This decision marks the end of years of hard work by all the team at the Bush who have campaigned so determinedly to secure a bright future for the theatre they love." "We already have some of the money for the relocation in place and there's more to raise in order to re-furbish and fit out this beautiful new home," Rourke added. "It's a remarkably human, light and welcoming building that feels like a perfect fit for the Bush. There is work to do to get it ready, but we will be able to open our doors in 2011 after the lease runs out on our current premises."
