Business Support for the Arts Falls

Business support for the arts fell by 11% in 2010. According to Arts and Business, companies invested £144m, down from £157m in 2009. This was the lowest investment since 2003/4.

Inly aeound 30% of FTSE 100 companies currently donate to the arts and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who announced a "year of corporate giving" in December, hopes to persuade a further 100 companies to donate. He is particularly keen to presuade the banks to make money available.

"If you are looking for ways to rehabilitate yourself in the public eye," he said, "then supporting things that really matter to society like the arts is an excellent thing to do."

Individual donations fell 4%, to £359m but there was an increase in funding from charitable trusts and foundations which kept the overall decrease in private funding to 3%.
