Byre Appoints New Artistic Director

It has been announced today that Stephen Wrentmore is to succeed Ken Alexander as Artistic Director of the Byre Theatre of St. Andrews, commencing March 2004.

Currently directing The Lieutenant of Inishmore at the National Theatre of Kosovo, Stephen Wrentmore has had an extremely varied career, working with a number of eminent modern playwrights and directors and with a wide range of theatre companies in Britain, including The RNT London, National Theatre Belgrade, Crucible Sheffield, Arizona Theatre Company in Tucson and Phoenix, Howard Barker's Wrestling School and Ambassadors Theatre Group.

Recently he directed Michael Frayn's Copenhagen in Arizona, The Country by Martin Crimp in Belgrade, Picasso's Women in the U.K. and The Vagina Monologues in Prishtina. He toured John Cairds R.N.T. production of Hamlet around Europe and America and was Staff Director for Trevor Nunn's 1999 RNT Ensemble.

Stephen’s directorial career began at Homerton College, Cambridge, after which he moved on to take a Post Graduate Diploma in Directing at the Central School of Speech and Drama, followed later by two years as an Arts Council Trainee at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Stephen has a strong interest in new writing and was a founder member of the Crucible Writer’s Group with Deborah Paige. He has developed work with the National Theatre Studio and the Caird Company - of which he is an associate. Also, at The National Theatre in Belgrade he was a director, mentor and development supervisor for the NADA Project, that is developing New Serbian Writing for the theatre.

Of his move to the Byre, Stephen says: “Earlier this year I was working with the Arizona Theatre Company, one of a number of ‘rep’ theatres in the States with a strong family ethos. It reminded me how much I enjoy being part of a building, and sharing the achievements and success of my work with that building and the people who work there.”

He continued “I feel I have spent good time learning and honing my craft, and this will always be ongoing. Now is the perfect time to re-establish myself with a theatre and the Byre, with its fantastic warm embrace feels like the right place at the right time. It is a beautiful little theatre that will be a privilege to call home.”

Commenting on Wrentmore's appointment, Neil Anderson, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Byre said: "The quality of applicants who sought to succeed Ken Alexander as Artistic Director is testament to the regard with which the Byre is now held in British theatrical life. In choosing Stephen we believe we have secured for our local community of St. Andrews and Fife, an artist who has the talent, energy and passion to present the very best in theatre, music and dance, and in doing so, raise the standing of the Byre Theatre both nationally and internationally."
