Tricycle Calls Blair to Account

Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre has announced the cast for its latest piece of verbatim political theatre, Called To Account, subtitled The Indictment of Anthony Charles Lynton Blair For The Crime Of Aggression Against Iraq – A Hearing.

The play is based on the questioning of key witnesses by two barristers, Philippe Sands QC (prosecution) and Julian Knowles (defence), in an attempt to discover whether there would be sufficient grounds to indict Prime Minister Tony Blair for the crime of aggression against Iraq. The "witnesses" interviewed were:

  • Sir Michael Quinlan - former Permanent Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Defence
  • Clare Short - Ex-Cabinet Minister
  • Michael Mates (Conservative) MP - Member of the Butler Inquiry
  • Sir Murray Stuart Smith -Former Security & Intelligence Services Commissioner
  • Juan Gabriel Valdes - Chilean Ambassador to the U.N. Security Council in 2003
  • Dean Kishore Mahbubani - Singaporean Ambassador to the U.N. Security Council in 2002
  • Lod Lester QC - Liberal Democrat Peer
  • Bob Marshall Andrews (Labour) MP QC
  • Ed Mortimer - Communications Director of the U.N. under Kofi Annan 1998-2006
  • Scott Ritter Arms Inspector in Iraq 1991-1998
  • Dr Shirwan Al-Mufti - An (Iraqi) Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Astrobiology, Cardiff University
  • Nadeem Kazmi - Director of International Relations for the Al-Khoei Foundation
  • Michael Smith - Former Daily Telegraph journalist now Sunday Times journalist
  • Don Van Natta - Multiple Pulitzer Prize winning, New York Times journalist
  • Richard Perle -an American political advisor and lobbyist who worked for the Reagan administration as an assistant Secretary of Defense and worked on the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee from 1987 to 2004. He was Chairman of the Board from 2001 to 2003 under the Bush Administration

The arguments and testimony gathered have been edited into a play by Richard Norton-Taylor. It is directed by Nichoals Kent and designed by Polly Sullivan..

The cast consists of David Beames, Jeremy Clyde, Ken Drury, Diane Fletcher, Terrance Hardiman, William Hoyland, Charlotte Lucas, David Michaels,Morven Macbeth, Roland Oliver, Raad Rawi,Shane Rimmer, Thomas Wheatley and James Woolley, mnost of whom have appeared in others of the theatre's pilitical plays.

Called to Account opens at the North London venue on 23rd April (previews from 19th). The first five evening performances are sold out.
