New Developments in Cambridge

Cambridge Arts Theatre has unveiled plans for its new building project, Act Two, the Theatre’s vision to secure its future through the creation of new foyer and performance spaces that build on both the legacy of John Maynard Keynes’ founding vision and its early nineties refurbishment.

The Theatre, currently in its 75th Anniversary year, has been granted planning permission by Cambridge City Council to extend its Peas Hill Foyer into the two adjoining units (formerly Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society and First Class Teas), creating a multi-purpose space that will transform the area into a cultural hub for the City and ensure the sustainability of the institution for the long term benefit of the local community.

Its capacity to respond to the increasing demands of a growing local population is severely handicapped by the physical limitations of the building, which was built on the only available land in the City centre in the 1930s: a wedge-shaped site, bounded on three sides by student hostels and medieval buildings. The Act Two project will increase the Theatre’s Front of House areas substantially with the potential to establish vital additional bar and catering income streams that are essential to the long-term survival of the Theatre.

The plans also include provision for a 200 seat studio Theatre on the 4th floor of the building, with the aim of fostering and nurturing smaller scale performing arts events and enabling the Theatre to produce its own work, launching productions from the Arts Theatre stages on to the national touring circuit.

The Theatre will need to raise £12million and building work is expected to commence in summer 2013.
