Casting for Allegro at Southwark Playhouse this summer

After Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! and Carousel came Allegro, the first of their collaborations not based on an existing source.

It opened on Broadway in 1947 and will now be seen in London for the first time with an adapted book by director Thom Southerland and new orchestrations by Mark Cumberland.

The story follows the life of a Midwestern born man from birth through to his mid-life self–discovery. Gary Tushaw, whose credits include Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd, plays Joseph Taylor Jr.

His family are played by Julia J Nagle (Marjorie Taylor), whose credits include Dirty Dancing and Company, Steve Watts (Dr Taylor), whose credits include Chariots Of Fire and The Mikado, and Susan Travers (Grandma Taylor), whose extensive career includes the European première of Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s State Fair.

Emily Bull and David Delve play Jennie Brinker and Ned Brinker, Katie Bernstein plays Emily West and Dylan Turner plays Charlie Townsend.

Also in the cast are Cassandra McCowan, Matthew McDonald, Louise Olley, Benjamin Purkiss, Jacqueline Tate, Samuel Thomas, Leah West and Matthew Woodyatt.

Dean Austin is the musical director and the choreographer is Lee Proud; set design is by Anthony Lamble and costume design is by Jonathan Lipman.

Allegro runs at Southwark Playhouse's The Large from 5 August to 10 September.
