Casting News Rowan Atkinson is to return to the West End stage for the first time in about twenty years. He will play Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh's revial of Oliver! which opens at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 14th January, 2009 (previews from 12th December, 2008). "I had been thinking for some time about returning to the stage," he said "and the idea of the role of Fagin, which has long intrigued me, (some time ago I even played the role in a school production), seemed like too good an opportunity to miss." Cameron Mackintosh added, "We have been discussing the possibility on and off for many years and to me this idea has always promised the perfect marriage of a brilliant mercurial role with a brilliant mercurial comic actor." No other casting has yet been announced and who plays Nancy and Oliver will depend on the outcome of the current reality TV show I'd Do Anything. Ruper Goold will direct the recreation of Sam Mendes' 1994 production at the London Palladium. In the cast for the fiftieth anniversary production of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party at the Lyric Hammersmith will be Sheila Hancock, Nicholas Woodeson, Lloyd Hutchinson, Justin Salinger and Alan Williams. The production, which is directed by the theatre's artistic director David Farr, runs from 8th to 24th May. It was at the Lyric that the play received its premiere in 1958. Desmond Barrit is to replace Nigel Planer as the Wizard in Wicked (Apollo Victoria) from 9th June. His last appearance in a London musical was in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum at the National in 2004. The cast for Lucy Kirkwood's new play Tinderbox at the Bush (opening 28th April with previews from 23rd) will be Nigel Betts, Bryan Dick, Jamie Foreman, Sartaj Garewal and Sheridan Smith.
