BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Cathy Tyson is to appear in original drama She Called Me Mother at Leicester’s pub theatre Upstairs at the Western.

Cathy Tyson said she is delighted to be visiting Leicester in the play which is part of the Black History Month celebrations and is presented by Pitch Lake Productions with Tara Arts.

She commented, “BHM is about innovation, inspiration and informing, among many other things. I feel that our company and play embody this spirit. The characters of Evangeline and Shirley experience painful and tender moments of memory, recovery and forgiveness.

"One of the key attractions is the Trinidadian language of Evangeline. Its rhythm adds humour and pathos to the play.”

Written by Michelle Inniss, She Called Me Mother is directed by Cara Nolan and will be performed Upstairs at the Western on Saturday 17 October.

Other highlights of the autumn season include Tangram Theatre’s The Element in the Room: A Radioactive Musical Comedy about the Death and Life of Marie Curie on Sunday 1 November, 2Magpies’ presentation of The Litvinenko Project about the day Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned on Wednesday 4 November, Nine Lives written by Zimbabwean-born playwright and poet Zodwa Nyoni and performed by Lladel Bryant on Friday 6 November and a double bill of Steven Berkoff’s Harry Christmas and Actor from Wednesday 9 until Saturday 19 December.

Full details of the programme are available at the Upstairs at the Western web site.
