Celebrating Gielgud

The Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Shakespeare Guild are presenting an evening to celebrate the centenary of Sir John Gielgud's birth.

The event, Monday, April 19th, will be held in the theatre on London's Shaftesbury Avenue whose name was changed from the Globe to the Gielgud in honour of Sir John's distinguished career.

Hosted by broadcaster Ned Sherrin, the evening will include readings and recitals by a cast of internationally renowned actors including Paul Schofield, Ian Richardson, Donald Sinden, Martin Jarvis, Michael Pennington and Judi Dench.

Proceeds from the evening will go towards a bursary for RADA students, and the voice and verse training programme for RSC actors in Stratford.

RSC artistic director Michael Boyd said: "Gielgud's legacy to the theatre is alive and well today. Theatre practitioners still look to him as an inspirational speaker of verse.

"The RSC is committed to celebrating the enjoyment of heightened language with the help of our bold new training programme. This event will be an entertaining evening in the company of talented performers and the proceeds will go towards a real investment in the future of UK theatre."

RADA principal Nicholas Barter added: "Gielgud was a student at RADA in the 1920s. He later became President of the Academy and was named its first honorary fellow.

"His continuing commitment to the students and his intense interest in their training resulted in a bequest by which we named our studio theatre to honour his association with us.

"It's wholly appropriate that in celebrating his remarkable career we should be able to support the continued training of those young actors who will be the next generation to follow- in his footsteps."
