All Change at Chichester The artistic director triumvirate of the Chichester Festival Theatre - Steven Pimlott, Martin Duncan and Ruth Mackenzie - will not be renewing their contract at the end of their third year in the shared posts of artistic director and chief executive. We are thrilled that the Arts Council has been so generous to Chichester," they said in a ststament, "and that we can leave the theatre with such an excellent financial settlement. We do hope everybody will come to see our last two productions, which exemplify the risk and adventure we have tried to deliver to Chichester. Under their leadership the theatre became the fourth best funded by the Arts Council of any theatre in the UK. Only the RSC, the National and the Manchester Royal Exchange receive more. Their introduction of themed programming and re-introduction of the rep company for the summer festival were tremendously successful. In 2003 the theme was "Venice", last year "Out of this world" and this year "Con art". In this year's season, Duncan directs How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and The Government Inspector, whilst Pimlott directs King Lear and 5/11. Sally Abbot, South East Director of Arts for Arts Council England, expressing sadness that they will not continue beyond their contracts, said, "They have brought their exceptional vision and cutting edge talents to bear on revitalising the Festival with an exciting new style of themed programming and ensemble working," and added that the whole of British Theatre has benefited from their work. However, a spokesperson for the theatre said that they had achieved what they had set out to do and now feel it is time for them to move on. The theatre will now start looking to fill two posts: artistic director and chief executive. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
