Free Writing Courses at the Chelsea

This Autumn the Chelsea Theatre, a new writing studio theatre on the King's Road recently described by the Guardian as "a hothouse of new writing talent" is running two writing courses aimed at novices and more experienced writers and both courses are free to participants.

Writing for Theatre - Level 1
To qualify for Level 1 we don't ask for any prior experience, simply enthusiasm. Don't be put off if you've always thought theatre or writing isn't for you, this course is accessible and inclusive, aimed simply at those with a genuine interest. You will complete a short one-act play and be expected to critically assess a selection of contemporary works. No previous writing experience is necessary. The course tutor is Polly Wiseman, co-founder of Fireraisers' Theatre Company and writer of Bright produced at the Soho Theatre in Autumn 2002.

Writing for Theatre - Level 2
This course is aimed at people with some experience of play writing. Over the period of the course you will complete a full-length play and will benefit from one-to-one guidance from the course tutor Tony Craze. Tony is former Artistic Director of the Soho Theatre Company, and winner of the Verity Bargate Award for his first play Shona. He has worked as a New Writing Associate for the Arts Council and his new play, Squint, has its World Premiere performances at the Chelsea Theatre from 22nd September 2003.

There are 10 places available per course, and enrolment is by application only. Anyone who would like to attend the Level 1 course should send their details together with an outline of why they would like to do the course. For Level 2, people should send their details, an outline of why they would like to do the course and 12 pages of something they have already written.

All applications must be received by 5pm on the 6th October 2003. The courses will start on Monday 13 October and run every Monday evening until 15 December 2003.

Both courses will be held at the Chelsea Theatre, King's Road, London SW10 0DR. For an informal chat or further details call 020 7352 1967 or email admin@chelseatheatre.org.uk
