Dateline: 9th January, 2008
New Directors Scheme at Chichester Chichester Festival Theatre, supported by the Michael & Morven Heller Charitable Foundation, will launch a trainee director scheme this January to give emerging directors the opportunity to develop their skills and gain first hand experience of working in a regional leading venue. The two year placement will also focus on running a festival and a venue, developing the essential qualities needed to become an Artistic Director. The scheme will initially run for three years, taking on a new trainee director each year. A schedule of training is to be drawn up and could include assisting on in-house productions during the Festival, staff directing on touring productions, contributing to the programming of Festival Events, researching possible programming opportunities for the Autumn season, co-direction of youth theatre show and script reading. In addition there will be an opportunity to contribute to casting, sit in on auditions and rehearsed readings, participate in in-house meetings, work closely with the Education Department and gain experience of every department within the theatre. Jonathan Church, Artistic Director at Chichester Festival Theatre said, "It is absolutely vital that the theatre industry develops new young directors for the future. At present the training provision in this country is woefully inadequate and I hope that this scheme, generously supported by the Heller Foundation, will make a small difference. "I am particularly keen that this new scheme not only develops the individual's abilities as a director, but also provides them with a broad understanding of how a subsidised producing venue works." Morven and Michael Heller from the Heller Charitable Foundation have worked closely with Chichester Festival Theatre for a number of years and are keen supporters of the arts. They have pledged to support the scheme for three years. For an application pack, visit www.cft.org.uk/careers or call Marian Stapley on 01243 812918 or email marian.stapley@cft.org.uk
