City of London Arts Forum The City of London has appointed the Barbicans Artistic Director, Graham Sheffield, to head a new forum which will promote and co-ordinate the Citys arts offerings to maximum effect. The Citys Chairman of Policy and Resources, Michael Snyder, said the appointment of an experienced and creative hand as director of the new City Arts and Culture Forum is vital to promote and sustain the Citys role as a "vibrant and culturally attractive place to live, work and do business." The new Forum will steer the direction of the Citys artistic endeavours, particularly in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics when the spotlight will be firmly on London, he added. Quality of life for City residents, workers and visitors is greatly improved by capturing and celebrating the Citys creative energies and fostering an appreciation of cutting-edge international trends in art, music and drama. Arts need strong administrative support to thrive, the new City Arts and Culture Forum will provide this direction and drive. Graham Sheffield said, The City of London Corporation is one of the major funders of arts and culture in the UK, and certainly the largest local government arts funder. Therefore it makes absolute sense for the City right now to develop a more overarching strategic approach to its impressive cultural portfolio, particularly in the run up to the Olympics, with all the cultural opportunities the games will bring. I am delighted to be given the task of leading this new initiative and to be able to work more closely with the diverse and top quality range of arts and culture institutions supported by the City, he said. The City Arts and Culture Forum will commence operations on 1st October and Sheffield will continue to act as Managing Director of the Barbican Centre until Nick Kenyon joins, also on 1st October.
