City of Culture - Final Four Named The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced the four cities which make up the shortlist of the 2013 UK City of Culture title. They are Birmingham, Derry, Norwich and Sheffield which were chosen from a "longlist" of fourteen. "It was a hard choice," said Phil Redmond, chair of the advisory panel, "but also heartening that all bidders had recognised the power of culture to bring people together; to work collectively within existing resources for a common goal and bring into being networks that may not have existed before. "2013 is only the first time the title will be awarded. 2017 is not that far away." Culture Minister Margaret Hodge said she had been very impressed with all the bids and thoped that each of the entrants would continue working on a cultural incentive to help create even more attractive places in which to live and work. Durham announced that it would continue with its plans and would almost certainly be a bidder in 2017.
