Close to Play Norma in Sunset Film Glenn Close will reprise her part as Norma Desmond in the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulvard, the Really Useful Group has announced. The film, which will cost around £33m, is to due to be released in time for Christmas 2006. RUG also says it expects her co-star to be either Ewan McGregor or Hugh Jackman, although we understand that the former is the favourite. Glenn Close first played Norma Desmond in Los Angeles in 1993 and went on to star in the Broadway production, for which she received a Tony. At first she was uncertain about taking the part - fearing, it is said, comparison with Gloria Swanson who starred in the 1950 film on which the show is based - but a meeting with Andrew Lloyd Webber at this year's Golden Globes ceremony changed her mind. It is widely reported that Barbra Streisand was keen to get the part. According to Austin Shaw of the Really Useful Film Group, "We were made aware by Streisand's friends that she was keen to take on the role but Glenn is the obvious choice." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
