Innovative Scottish theatre company Communicado, which has been dormant
for a while, is now back with a new project. Gerry Mulgrew and Gerda
Stevenson posted the following to the SCOTS-NITS mailng list:
Communicado are back on the road with a piece (primarily) for young
people called ZLATA'S DIARY, a dramatic treatment of the diary of
Zlata Filipovic, written when she was twelve years old and dealing
with her experiences during the siege of Sarajevo in Bosnia in the
early 90's. It will have live music, and a physical interpretation
of the story, which is harrowing, but with humour.
It will feature Gerda Stevenson and a cast of the best actors in
Scotland. I am adapting the work for the stage and will be collaborating
with Zlata Filipovic herself, who now lives in Dublin, studying for
a degree in Peace Studies. There will be a modest educational programme
associated with the production, involving members of the Bosnian community
resident in Scotland.
This production which is funded by a SAC project grant, follows
on from a six week research period, also arts council funded, into
six different pieces of thematic material, including plays, which
the company undertook in March 2003. We have already produced, with
the Highland Festival, another piece workshopped during this period,
Ian Stephen's SEVEN HUNTERS, the story of the Flannan Isles mystery.
ZLATA'S DIARY opens at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen on 20th May 2004,
and so far the tour includes the Macrobert, Cumbernauld, the Highland
Festival in Inverness, The Tron and the Traverse theatres.
