Edinburgh film fans do not want the proposed new cinema which will replace the Filmhouse to be named after Sean Connery. The new Filmhouse, which will be built in Festival Square, will operate all the year round as well as being, as now, the main venue of the Edinburgh Film Festival, and Edinburgh film fans were invited to make comments in a special comments book placed in the foyer of the existing buildding as part of an exhibition of what the rebuolt venue would look like. Eleven comments out of forty (more than 25%) protested at the idea of calling it The Sean Connery Filmhouse. One fan wrote, "The man is a tax exile. He does not pay taxes in this country," and others protested that it shouldjust be called , as now, the Filmhouse. The book has now been withdrawn. Filmhouse chief executive Ginnie Atkinson defended the proposal and said it was too early to say if the fans' protest would lead the management to reconsider the name. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
