Maria Will Play Six Shows 23-year old Connie Fisher, who won the How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? reality TV show to find a new star to play Maira in The Sound of Music, will play six shows a week, not just three as has been runoured, Andrew Lloyd Webber has said. "I am irritated by some of the nonsense that has been written about this," he added. "We have a duty to consider what is best for Connie's career in the longer run. We certainly do not want her ending up like Julie Andrews who strained her voice when young and who can no longer sing. "It is absolutely normal for a younger leading lady to sing only six out of eight possible performances a week "This was the case when Sarah Brightman starred in The Phantom of the Opera at the age of 22. It was the same for Elaine Paige in Evita and is true of Elena Roger who is starring in the new production of Evita." There had been rumours that the winner would only appear in three performances a week and that the TV programme was essentially a publicity-seeking gimmick. Fears have also been expressed about the ability of an untrained singer to sustain the pressure of a West End run, even in the short term, but Fisher does have training, a degree in Musical Theatre from Mountview. She is currently working in a call centre. Born in Belfast, she moved to Pembrokeshire when she was six and has been a member of Haverfordwest Operatic Society. She was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre from 1999 to 2002. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
