Micgael Crwaford as Count Fosco in The Woman in White

Crawford Leaving Woman Temporarily

According to the Express newspaper, Michael Crawford, who has not appeared onstage in The Woman in White for almost three weeks, blaming his absence on 'flu, is to leave the show early. He was due to play Count Fosco, the part for which he has received an Olivier nomination, until 28th May. However the paper reports that Michael Ball will take over the part on 22nd February and that Crawford's understudy, Steve Varnom, will continue to appear if Crawford is unable to do so.

Announcements as to whether or not Crawford is appearing in a particular performance have been made on a daily basis.

A later press release, responding to the Express story, says that Crawford is now scheduled to return on 4th April, after taking a break to recover from the 'flu virus, and will then continue until the end of his contract (28th May). It also states that Ball will take over on 21st February or earlier.

This is Crawford's first appearance on stage in the West End since he originated the role of the Phantom in Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera in 1986.

No announcement has been made as to whether or not Crawfiord will accompany the show when it transfers to Broadway.
