Dateline: 26th July, 2009
Creative Producing Workshops Nick Hennegan, artistic director and producer of Birmingham's Maverick Theatre Company, is to run two workshops on Creative Producing in September, at Birmingham Rep on 19th and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 26th. "Many arts funders and organisations are now encouraging artists to 'have a go' at mounting their own work and in effect become their own producers," Maverick's website says. "And over the last few years a new title has come about - the Creative Producer. But what is really involved?" There is, Hennegan says, nowhere for anyone to go to get advice on being a Producer and particularly a Creative Producer. "The ITC," he told the BTG, "run courses for theatre companies, and SOLT workshops on West End producing (I attended one in 1997) but with artists' organisations such as the Writers Guild urging their members to put on their own shows, I think the time is right to try and offer a starting point for writers, directors and artists who want to find out how to Produce and just what is involved in putting on their own production - an introduction that will lead to further training, hopefully, if the participants are sufficiently moved to do so." The cost for each workshop is £79, including documentation and tea and coffee. The workshops will run from 11 am - 6pm and full details are on the Maverick website at www.mavericktheatre.co.uk/107015.html. "In keeping with the Maverick not-for-profit tradition," he added, "I'd like to keep the price as low as possible to make it accessible. I can just about break even if we have around 15 or 20 people at £79 each for the day."
