Ian Richardson

Richardson to Return to West End

Ian Richardson is to return to the West End in The Creeper, a psychological drama by Pauline McAuley. Directed by Bill Bryden and co-starring James Ellis, The Creeper will play at the Theatre Royal Windsor, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford and the Theatre Royal Bath, before it moves into London.

Set in the mid-sixties, the play is about a young opportunist who inveigles his way into the home of a prosperous if eccentric member of the landed gentry with fascinating results. Dark secrets emerge as the younger man, skillfully concealing his shady past, begins to exert his power and challenge the status quo.

Ian Richardson is perhaps best known for his sinister portrayal of Machiavellian politician Francis Urquhart in the House Of Cards trilogy for the BBC as well as leading roles in Porterhouse Blue, Gormenghast, The Final Cut, Anthony Blunt in Blunt (opposite Anthony Hopkins) and Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy.

One of his generation's most talented stage actors, he has had a long and prestigious association with the RSC, appearing countless times with them, perhaps most memorably as Richard II. He took the title role of Marat in Peter Brook's seminal stage and film production of Marat Sade and was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady on Broadway.

James Ellis is still probably best remembered for his performance as Jack Lynch is every series of the groundbreaking police series Z Cars, which began in 1962.

Bill Bryden is a former Associate Director of the National Theatre under Peter Hall, where his hugely acclaimed productions included The Mystery Plays. He is one of our leading directors, having worked extensively at the Royal Opera House, in the West End and at the National Theatre.

The Creeper plays at the Theatre Royal, Windsor, from Monday 22nd August to Saturday 3rd; at the September Yvonne Arnaud from Monday 5th to Saturday 10th September, and at the Theatre Royal, Bath, from Monday 12th to Saturday 17th September.

The West End venue and dates will be announced later.
